💪 Conditioning expectations
Conditioning is critical to success. Players should arrive in peak soccer-playing condition. Because tryouts consist of two practices per day in the intense August heat, high-level physical and mental execution is required. Expect three timed conditioning runs during the tryout week.
🛑 Attendance Policy
Attendance at tryouts is mandatory for all players seeking placement on either the Varsity or JV teams. All players selected for the Varsity or JV teams must attend all practices and games during the pre-season leading up to their first day of school, regular season, and playoffs (Varsity only).
9th grade players are encouraged to attend Varsity and JV tryouts. All 9th grade players who are not placed on the Varsity or JV teams must tryout again for the 9th grade team. Tryouts for the 9th grade team will occur during the first week of school. Scroll down on this page to see specific notes from Coach Erwin.
Tryouts - Week #1 - August 17th-21st
The first week of tryouts is designed to assess the relative skill and conditioning of players. No position or spot on any team is guaranteed, and every player will be re-evaluated each year. Teams are expected to be posted on this webpage by 2:00 PM, Friday, August 21st. Training will begin promptly for every session, so it would be wise to arrive a few minutes early to be ready to go. In addition to soccer training, there will be three timed conditioning runs that players will be expected to complete successfully.
2 Mile Run – Target time is 12 minutes for 2 miles.
Beep Test – 20 yard shuttle run test. (subject to change)
Manchester United Fitness Test (Modified) – Players must run 100 yards in the allotted time and then return to the starting line within the recovery time (total time for run and return is one minute). Players must complete as many sprints within the time frame as possible.
Afternoon sessions will be comprised of both cross-field small-sided scrimmages and full field scrimmages. Players’ afternoon time slot may vary from day to day. Players should be stretched and warmed up at the start of the session. NOTE: There will be no afternoon session on Friday, August 21st.
Preseason Practice Schedule - Week #2 – August 24th-28th
Varsity Practice: 7:30 – 9:30 AM and 3:00 – 5:00 PM (schedule subject to change)
JV Practice: To be determined

9TH GRADE TRYOUTS
Stoga Freshmen Boys’ Soccer - Notes from Coach Erwin below
Coach Erwin - erwinc@tesd.net
**NOTE: Schoology is unlikely available to incoming 9th grade families until the first week of July when the school updates their systems.
Players should join the Conestoga Athletics’ Schoology Group today.
To join the Schoology Group, open Schoology and click on “Groups” (on the top of the page) 🡪 Then click on “My Groups” (in the upper right) 🡪 Finally, click on “Join a Group” (blue button) 🡪 Enter the access code WXMWC-82QSPand click “Join.”
This code is available on the Conestoga Athletics website, under the tab “About Athletics.” Scroll down to find it.
Get your paperwork in or, legally, you will not be allowed to try out. The paperwork information is on the Conestoga Athletics website.
The first day of school, Monday, Aug 31:
MANDATORY MEETING (most likely in the Stoga cafeteria) from 3:20 – 4:00 PM.
This will be announced through the Conestoga Athletics’ Schoology Group, so be sure to join the group ASAP.
Tuesday – Friday, Sep 1 – Sep 4: Tryouts, 3:30 – 5:30 PM
In past years, the tryouts have been held at Wilson Farm Park.
With the new fields at the high school, the tryouts might now be held at the high school. This will be announced at the August 31 mandatory meeting.
Due to the number of players who try out, there have always been cuts for the freshmen team. The tryouts are highly competitive.
The best thing that players can do to prepare for tryouts is to play as much soccer as possible between now and then and to show up at tryouts in excellent shape.
The Regular Season for Those Who Make the Team:
All practices run from 3:30 – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday. There are no games or practices on weekends.
The season is seven weeks long; there are no playoffs. Games are comprised of two 30-minute halves.
If a player is going to have a conflict (clubs, other sport practices, music lessons) he should not come out for soccer.
There are tryouts, so it is not fair for a player to try out for the team, make it (thus taking someone else’s spot) and then say that he is not able to attend all the practices / games due to another commitment.
If a player makes the team and is injured, he is still expected to attend all practices and games – unless he is at the doctor’s or has a concussion and is told to stay out of the sun.
Final thoughts:
Show up for tryouts in shape – to avoid injury.
Not everyone who tries out will make the freshmen team, but there is no dishonor in playing for the freshmen team. Many freshmen players have gone on to play for the Varsity and some have even become Varsity captains. And then there is Chris Donovan.
Why play freshmen soccer?
Fun in general / fun to play for your school.
You’re out on a field and not going home after school only to sit on your phone.
It puts you into a small group right away – makes the school smaller.
You will have an activity right away at the start of the school year.
Meet new people.
You will be joining an outstanding program.
I look forward to seeing everyone on the field in August.
Sincerely,
Coach Erwin
